Tips for Extending Digital Billboard Life

Collin Huber, Daktronics Out of Home Advertising Market Manager

On this week’s Billboard Insider podcast Daktronics Out of Home Market Manager Collin Huber talked about things a company can do to extend the useful life of digital billboards:

“There are some companies that even though we ship signs at 8,500 nits brightness levels, they’ll start off by only operating them at say 6,500 nits or 7,000 nits…Some awareness to content issues as well.  White content can use up the most power there…and white content tends to look the worst on digital displays…White backgrounds are not necessarily the best background to use…As a sign gets older it maybe acquires some dust on the louvres so there’s a cleaning process that’ll make the display look better.  Other general maintenance suggestions are sometimes you’ll have to change out a module and if it goes in the middle of the sign it might be a little brighter than the surrounding ones…a general maintenance rule of thumb is to put newer modules in the corner…so they’re not as noticeable.”
