Sean Reilly predicted 2020 will be the Great American Road Trip Summer in a May 12 interview at the JP Morgan Global Technology Media and Communications Conference:

This summer it’s clear to me for a variety of reasons that we’re going to see a record for miles driven…People are not going to fly overseas, they’re probably not going to fly domestically…they’re going to drive.  And it’s going to be different destinations. It may not be Disneyland Orlando but it might be Hershey Pennsylvania…or it might the the Grand Canyon or Yosemite…

Regional travel is the new normal says Morning Brew in Travel During a Pandemic.  Here’s the takeaway;

“Many analysts expect summer 2020 to herald the return of the Great American Road Trip, as travelers explore destinations closer to home in the comfort of their own cars.”

AAA says that travel bookings have been rising in AAA Travel: Pandemic Will Suppress Memorial Day Travel But Travelers Already Planning Future Trips:

“AAA.com/travel online bookings have been rising, though modestly, since mid-April, suggesting travelers’ confidence is slowly improving. When it is safe to travel, AAA predicts vacationers will have a preference for U.S destinations, mostly local and regional locations, and the great American road trip.”

  1. I was out and about this Memorial Day and traffic was extremely heavy. You would never know there is a stay at home order here in PA.
