Jon Odom on Steel Prices and Converting a Static Billboard to Digital

Productivity Fabricators is a family owned business which designs and manufacturers outdoor advertising structures.  Insider asked Productivity fabricators President Jon Odom .

Steel prices are up.

All steel prices have increased. Some more than others:

  •  Steel plate is up 80% since Jan 1.
  •  Beams & angle are up 50% since Jan 1.
  • Pipe is up 35% since Jan 1.

Some sizes are also getting scarce and with long delivery times.

How long are productions times right now. If  someone sends you a down payment how long will it take to ship a structure?

8 weeks.

Are the major out of home companies reentering the market or is most of the activity still independents?

Everyone is in the market.

What does an out of home company have to think about when it wants to swap a static face for a digital face?

This can become a complicated and expensive process. Most locations require a building permit to add a digital.  To get the permit will require an engineered and stamped drawing of the supporting structure with digital shown on drawing.  In most cases a drawing of the existing structure is not available and requires field measurements of the structure to be made.  After a drawing of the structure is made, a PE will review it and in most cases some modification will be required to make the structure meet current building codes.  It is not unusual on a single pole structure to have to replace the head and add material to the column and footing to get it up to code.
