Here are Billboard Insider’s five top out of home stories in 2017:

Scenic Lawsuit Fails. 

In October 2016 Scenic America’s attempt to overturn FWHA guidance which permits digital billboards along federal highways was rejected by the Supreme Court which refused to reconsider a US Court of Appeals decision.  This ended a four year court battle.  OAAA led the successful court fight on behalf of out of home operators.

T-Rex Goes Extinct. 

T-Rex went quiet after bringing 59 lawsuits against out of home operator from 2012-2016 for patent infringement.  Maybe T-Rex’s patents expired.  Maybe Broadsign’s countersuit was the punch that staggered the schoolyard bully.  Whatever the reason, out of home operators have one less litigation worry.

Out of home drives online activity.

Our article on the OAAA sponsored March 2017 Nielsen Online Activation survey was the most popular post on Billboard Insider during 2017.  The Nielsen Online Activation Survey demonstrated that out of home delivers more online activity per dollar spent than television, radio and print.  You need to read the Nielsen study and communicate it to your clients.

Private Equity Buoys Out of Home.

Boston-Omaha is funding Link Media’s acquisitions in the south and midwest.  McWhorter Capital Partner’s Horton Outdoor has been buying companies in the southeast.   In December Shamrock Capital invested in Branded Cities.  DoMedia raised $3 million from Advantage Capital Partners and the Ohio Innovation Fund to expand its automated outdoor advertising marketplace.  Adquick raised $1.1 million from a group which former Y-combinator Garry Tan and Twitter co-founder Alex Ohanian.

iHeart Creditors Pushing For Control of Clear Channel Outdoor

iHeart’s creditors want to do a debt for equity swap to be granted control of Clear Channel Outdoor.  Insider thinks a spinout from iHeart would be a great thing.  Fewer distractions and the ability to use cashflow to grow a company instead of sending special dividends to an insolvent parent.
