Traffic Volumes Good for Billboards, Not so Good for Transit

The FHWA November 2023 Traffic Volume Trends contains good news for roadside billboards   Look that this FHWA chart of millions of vehicle miles traveled on all roads and streets.  November 2023 million miles travelled was 263,557 or 1.3% above the pre-covid level of 260,326.   Million miles travelled for the first 11 months of 2019 was 2,975,313 or only 1% below million miles travelled of 3,000,015 for the first 11 months of 2019.  Fewer people may be commuting to the office but they are still driving.

Ridership figures are more sobering for transit.  APTA reports that total transit ridership was 1.8 billion in the third quarter of 2023, down 28% from the 2.5 billion ridership in the third quarter of 2019.  Want to see the updated weekly transit ridership figures by region or for your transit system?  Bookmark the APTA Ridership Trends Dashboard.
