Three of a kind: selfies

With the advent of smartphones and social networks like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram we really are living in a ‘Selfie generation’. Posting on social media and the OOH industry are a great match as they rely on eye-catching visuals to cut through the clutter, so today Daily Billboard Blog’s ‘3 of a Kind’ is focusing on billboards with a selfie-theme.
First up is the ultimate selfie billboard with the vanity-obsessed models of Zoolander 2, played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. This extra-dimensional extension billboard for the movie sequel was spied along West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip towards the end of January 2016 and totally captures the spirit of the comedy which spoofs the fashion and modeling industry.
The second example is slightly more conventional, but the giant-sized pink ad creative for T-Mobile still makes an impressive impact high over Wilshire Boulevard in L.A.’s Koreatown district at the beginning October 2014. This super-sized wallscape is ideal for the telecommunications brand, capturing the fun-loving spirit of its youthful target market and standing out for miles around.
And the final example is a funny Miss Piggy special extension cut-out billboard for the very meta behind-the-scenes reality TV approach to The Muppets which aired on ABC. This attention-grabbing billboard featuring the glamorous, fame-obsessed muppet was spotted along Century Boulevard in September 2015 and totally fits with this“egotistical pig’s” personality.
If you like this fantastic trio of examples, then you’ll also want to check out Apple’s user-generated Shot on iPhone outdoor ad campaign which totally celebrates the selfie medium on billboards in cities around the globe.
Come back next month when we’ll be looking at three ways with bathtubs in the outdoor skyline (yes, you read that correctly).
