South New Jersey Billboard Campaign Fights Drug Overdoses

Hammonton, New Jersey – The South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) teamed with its out of home advertising partners in the South Jersey Region in late September 2020 to promote Governor Phil Murphy’s and the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services’ (DHS) free giveaway of naloxone, the drug that has saved the lives thousands of those addicted to opioids experiencing drug overdoses. Garden State Outdoor, Interstate Outdoor and Outfront Media donated space on their digital billboards throughout the Philadelphia-South Jersey market to call public attention to the giveaway at over 360 pharmacies across the Garden State.

Nearly 90% of the 2,900 reported drug overdose deaths in New Jersey involved opioids according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.  The free naloxone giveaway is just one of the innovative strategies that the department uses to combat the health challenge brought about by addiction to opioids.

SJTA Executive Director, Stephen F. Dougherty said, “The strong partnership that SJTA has developed with its out of home advertising partners allowed us to assist Governor Murphy and DHS in raising awareness of the free naloxone giveaway throughout Southern New Jersey. The willingness of our partners to provide thousands of dollars of advertising space free of charge demonstrates how the public and private sectors can work together to solve the challenges facing our community.”

The out of home campaign was expedited by the use of digital technology according to Jeff Gerber, Chief Operating Officer of Interstate Outdoor Advertising who helped expedite the campaign, “The Naloxone Giveaway was a demonstration that proved that digital advertising is difficult to ignore and highly effective. It took just days for DHS to create the campaign and for this important message to be posted on billboards throughout the Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey Market. Speaking for my colleagues in the Out of Home Advertising industry who collaborated with SJTA, we are proud to support the Naloxone Giveaway and to help save lives.”
