“See Me Because” Runs in New York and Milwaukee

New York, NY – Award-winning nonprofit Art Start is proud to announce the launch of their SEE ME BECAUSE public transit campaign, a multi-city initiative providing historically marginalized youth from New York City and Milwaukee with a large-scale platform sparking dialogue around youth identities and self-determination in a public space. During the months of July and August 2022, Art Start will utilize public space as a contemporary art gallery, as they premiere this series of 20 black and white photographic portraits of local teens from both cities, accompanied by each individual’s personal story as told in their own words. With generous sponsorship from high-performance skincare brand Dr. Jart+, design-driven lifestyle brand Herschel Supply Co. and nonprofit Humanities NY, SEE ME BECAUSE will be installed across New York’s MTA subway system on live board digital screens from Outfront Media and throughout Milwaukee’s The Hop streetcar network courtesy of MKE Downtown.

In conjunction with the public transit campaign activation, Art Start will host kick-off celebrations at New York’s Samsung 837 and the Milwaukee Public Market on Thursday, July 28th. Both events promise guests an engaging evening of interactive activities, large-scale displays, and performances. Admission is free for both events.

SEE ME BECAUSE is the statement completed by youth participants in the Art Start Portrait Project, a year-long project and platform for youth to establish their own narratives, explore the complexity of their identities, envision their futures, and express how they want to be seen by the world. Through SEE ME BECAUSE youth declare aloud and publicly why they should be seen and why their voice matters and has power. Visit seemebecause.org to experience the living archive of these and more portraits. Follow and contribute to the campaign using #SeeMeBecause.
