Richard Peterson on Safety Priorities for OOH Companies

The OAAA Operations & Safety Seminar is scheduled for September 19-21 at OUTFRONT Media’s plant in Houston, Texas.  Insider talked to the OAAA’s Safety, Standards, and Technology Committee Chair Richard Peterson, President of Porter Advertising, about the importance of safety in OOH operations.

Why is safety an important topic for out of home companies?
We owe it to the hard-working folks in the industry to provide safe working conditions. We cannot expect those who work in the field to avoid complacency if we allow ourselves to become complacent about safety.

If you could change one thing about the way out of home companies handle safety, what would it be?
I don’t know that it is a change, exactly; but we should have a certain mindset we bring to safety. We need to make investing in safety a priority – for the health of employees and business.

There should always be more money in the budget than only what’s deemed “necessary.” OSHA fines or high-experience modifiers on worker comp insurance are a terrible waste of resources that could be invested in a first-class safety program.

What are some of the not-to-be missed topics that will covered at the safety seminar?

We have a content-rich agenda, covering everything from an OSHA update structural to vegetation control. Topics included:

  • OSHA update
  • Fall protection
  • Structural inspections
  • Safety meetings
  • Driver safety
  • Dealing with subcontractors
  • Powerline safety
  • Recycling
  • Vegetation control

The impressive list of speakers ranges from some of the most knowledgeable veterans in our industry to outside experts who support or regulate OOH.

Anything else to add?
I realize that this event coincides with the IBO USA conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, but the target audience at the OAAA Safety Seminar is operational professions, sub-contractors as well as company principals.

OAAA members, non-OAAA members and sub-contractors are welcome to attend.

A handful of suppliers will be on hand to discuss new products and services. If you are interested in sponsoring or becoming a vendor at this event, contact Maci Werlinich at mwerlinich@oaaa.org. There will be plenty of time for networking at the event and evening receptions.
