Rate This Ad by Wes Frick

Rate This Ad allows a billboard designer to rate a random piece of billboard artwork using the following scale: 1 (not good), 2 (below average), 3 (average), 4 (very good), 5 (great). Then the designer talks about what they may have done differently for outdoor advertising. This week’s rating is provided by Wes Frick of Wes Frick Design.
Red Wing Shoes
Rating: 3 (average)
  • Great use of alliteration. “Right Boot. Right Job. Right Here.”
  • The ad has a hometown, local feel which is on-brand for the Red Wing flagship store.
  • I’m drawn to the boot in the middle but it took me a moment to find the advertiser, Red Wing.
  • This concept works closeup, but may not be legible from far away, so the design elements should be enlarged.
Here’s how I would improve the ad.
  • I made Red Wing much larger.
  • I included an 8 foot extension.
  • I placed the copy “Right Boot. Right Job. Right Here.” on the right side because it repeats the word “Right” three times, so I saw this to be fitting.
  • Although this isn’t a directional ad people need to know Redwing’s flagship store & outlet is downtown, so I added the location at the bottom.
  • I removed the white banner because the one background effect simplifies the advertisement.
