OUTFRONT CFO Matt Siegel has changed the company’s focus from revenue to cashflow. Here’s an analysis of Siegel’s activities, sponsored and analyzed by SignValue.
- OUTFRONT has shown a willingness to exit low margin municipal billboard contracts in New York and LA.
- OUTFRONT shed 6% of their workforce in 2025.
- OUTFRONT recently renewed the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Contract at 60% of gross ad revenue with no annual guarantee versus a previous contract of the greater of $2.9 million or 65% of gross revenue.
- At the recent Citi TMT conference Siegel suggested OUTFRONT will take a different approach to transit contracts. OUTFRONT is happy to sell the advertising but doesn’t want to own the structures:
“The audience is great. The franchises are good. The ability to be creative is great, and you can tie it into your other inventory. The problem is the contracts. And what we ran into with the MTA, the construction and the write off, we’re generally out of the construction business. We’re happy to screw signs in. We’re happy to purchase signs. We just don’t want to be financially responsible for that. We think that should be a different part of the business. We sell advertising. We sell it very well….For us, audience is great, franchise is great. The contracts need to be improved to reflect something mutually beneficial for us and the municipality.”
SignValue’s Take: Not surprised that Siegel doesn’t want to own transit structures. You’d think that way too if you’d taken $553 million in writeoffs on capital invested to digitize New York subways. But revenue from managed signs creates less long-term value for shareholders.
