New and Noted – Sean Reilly, venture investor

Lamar CEO Sean Reilly is a venture investor.  He participated in a $2.3 million fundraising round for MasteryPrep, a Baton-Rouge based company that sells standardized testing software and training materials.

Tired of ads which follow you around the web?  They’re going away in two years.  Google is making third party cookies obsolete by 2020: “we plan to phase out our support for third-party cookies in Chrome.  Out intention is to do this within two years.”  Google is following in the steps Firefox and Apple.  Insider’s take: This makes online digital ads a less formidable competitor to out of home because the ad makers have fewer targeting tools.

A Volkswagen executive says level 5 autonomous cars may never happen.  “This is one of the hardest problems we have.  This is like we are going to Mars.”  Level 4 autonomy (start to finish operation limited by a geofence) is still possible.  Insider’s take:  Geofenced autonomous cars will probably be limited to dense urban areas and cars which travel fixed routes over and over which suggests there will still be manual cars in rural areas and on rural roads and freeways.
