New and Noted – March 10, 2020

Scott Bell gives some lessons on starting a billboard company in a profile in Auburn’s Harbert College of Business.  Scott and Neil Bell started, ran and sold Bell Media’s billboard business in Georgia.  Scott now runs Bell Media, a web design, marketing and hosting company.  Neil Bell went on to found New South Outdoor.

The New York city tech czar is threatening to sue LinkNYC for installation delays and the failure to pay the city $30 million.  A company spokesman says “While the public’s use of LinkNYC’s free services has far exceeded expectations installing Links has proven more difficult and costly than expected – largely due to the city’s own rules and bureaucracy.”  But here’s the sentence in the article which caught Insider’s eye: “revenue figures have been underwhelming since the system launched in 2016.”

Insider’s take:  Street level kiosks are much harder to make money on than your think.  There are visibility issues, small screen issues, damage issues and costs of building in a complex urban environment.
