Lamar Declines Billboard Ads in Spokane

The Spokesman Review reports that Lamar has removed controversial anti mask billboards in Spokane paid for by the John Birch society.   “The community was not super happy with that message.  We try to stay away from anything that is far too offensive to the public,” says Lamar Spokane VP and General Manager Duane Halliday.  Lamar is also taking flak for deciding not to run billboards calling out police brutality and systemic racism in Spokane.

Insider’s take:  Deciding what to run and what not to run is one of the vexing issues of operating a billboard plant.  It’s difficult to balance a concern for free speech with a need to avoid offending.
