Inrix Reports Traffic Up 5% Last Week

US passenger travel increased by an additional 5% last week according to the Inrix US National Traffic Volume Synopsis issue #7.

  • Passenger travel improved to 64% of normal for the week ended May 1 up from 59% of normal for the week ended April 24.  Travel is compared to a control period in February before traffic began to decline.
  • Long-haul truck travel is 92% of normal.  Make sure your truck stop clients know this.
  • Passenger traffic has declined by the most in New Jersey and Hawaii (with traffic down by 55%).  Passenger traffic has declined the least in Wyoming (down 12%).  Here’s the state by state chart showing how much traffic is down.  Don’t be shy about pointing this out to advertisers when they call and say that they deserve a refund because no cars are on the road.

Insider’s take:  Traffic has increased for three straight weeks.  Looks like we’ve passed the worst of the covid-19 induced reduction in traffic.  Further improvements are expects now that states are easing say at home rules.
