Earn cash by renting space on your billboard structures for a sensor

Want to earn an extra couple hundred dollars a month per billboard structure by putting a hardware sensor on the billboard?  Read on.  Genlogs.io is developing a nationwide network of sensors to track the real-time flow of trucks.  The network is designed to help fleet owners reduce the number of empty miles, enable freight brokers to source trusted carriers while combating fraud and to assist law enforcement agencies in the fight against human trafficking, fentanyl smuggling and cargo theft.  One of the ways Genlogs gathers data is by placing sensors on billboards to derive the real-time locations of trucks. Billboard Insider talked with Ryan Joyce, the company’s Co-Founder and CEO.

Ryan, what’s the equipment which you want to install on a billboard?

For all our partners, we install a small sensor box that is only 18″x24″ inches, plus some discreet attachments (such as cameras) that comply with all local regulations. We handle everything, including the install on the base of the billboard to capture data from every truck that passes by the sign. All our existing billboard partners have commented that they don’t notice the sensor as they drive by, and it doesn’t interfere with any advertisements — it just boosts NOI with more passive revenue per sign.

What sorts of billboards are you looking to install the device on?

We are seeking to install a few hundred sensors immediately across the US, with further expansion planned in the coming years. A candidate billboard location must be adjacent to a major trucking lane and be within ~100 feet of the roadway. The sign must have clear lines of sight to passing traffic, and also have an electric power source. Signs that are just out of the 100 foot range (maybe 100′-125′), do not have power, or may be on an artery highway could still be good Phase 2 candidate sites as we will continue to improve our sensor technology with better cameras and improved solar power, so please reach out either way!

How much money can a billboard company make by renting space to Genlogs?

We are initially paying up to $200/month per sign — depending on the sensor package — with the possibility for additional profit sharing in the future. We can also front-load payments to free up more cash which operators can use to invest in additional signs.
