Driverless Cars Won’t Eliminate Accidents

Remember predictions of an accident free driverless car future.  Not so fast says the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.  The Institute predicts driverless cars may only stop one-third of all crashes.  A driverless car will be able to stop accidents due to drunk or distracted driving.  They may not be able to stop accidents due to road conditions or misjudged speed or incorrect evasive procedures.  To avoid those accidents the cars may need to be programmed to prioritize safety over speed and convenience.
