Daily Billboard Blog’s 3 of a Kind: Pixelated

This month for Daily Billboard Blog’s 3 of a Kind feature we are shining a spotlight on three billboards that have been pixelated to great effect. This design gimmick helps advertisers hide what may be illegal, or tease something which may not be socially acceptable, or restricted by guidelines, making passersby want to see it even more.
First up is this tongue-in-cheek pixelated billboard for the launch of Amy Schumer’s Comedy Central sketch show, Inside Amy, from along the Sunset Strip in April 2013. This wardrobe malfunction ad creative certainly hints at the bawdy type of comedy you may be in for if you watch.
The next example is also from the entertainment industry and is for the sophomore season of Bravo’s Odd Mom Out comedy series, starring Jill Kargman. This pixelated billboard creative snapped along La Brea Avenue in June 2016 hides her potty mouth and suggests the outspoken humor of the sitcom.
The third billboard is for the legal cannabis dispensary MedMen and the pixelated nature of the ad obviously suggests it meets California’s weed industry advertising standards about not showing the actual product, whether it be edibles, joints or other products, and at the same time drives footfall into stores. This mysterious pixelated creative was one of four MedMen billboards snapped at the busy intersection of La Cienega Boulevard and Holloway Drive in January 2020.
Come back next month when we’ll be taking a closer look at three dangling billboard installations sure to catch passersby eyes. In the meantime stay safe and healthy, and wear a mask to protect yourself and others.
