Daily Billboard Blog’s 3 of a Kind: Hanging Around

This month Daily Billboard Blog’s 3 of a Kind feature showcases three examples that give new meaning to the term – hanging around on street corners. This trio of billboard installations use dangling embellishments to help these movies and TV shows stand out even more around the skies of La La Land.
First up is the eye-catching billboard for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, the hidden camera prank movie starring Johnny Knoxville aged by makeup prosthetics. This grandparent is living up to the film’s title by irresponsibly dangling his grandson from the billboard hoarding and giving him an epic wedgie in the process, making an extra-dimensional impression along the Sunset Strip in October 2013.
In May 2018 Netflix tried a different approach to this dangling gimmick for the second season of teen drama, 13 Reasons Why. Expanding on the season’s key art, a string of polaroids was hung from billboard to billboard connecting the photography idea to opposite sides of the heavily trafficked Sunset Strip and causing a real spectacle for eastbound passersby.
The final example sees Miles Morales’ Spider-Man using his amazing spider powers to swing from the bottom right corner of the billboard for the Oscar-winning animated movie, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which is very on-brand for the Marvel Comics character. This comic book billboard installation was spotted along La Cienega Boulevard in L.A. in November 2018.
Come back next month when we’ll be getting into the political arena with three examples with a topical election and voting theme from different industries. Until then, stay safe and be kind.
