Daily Billboard Blog’s 3 of a Kind: Childhood Photos

During these uncertain times we could all do with a laugh, and that’s what these three childhood photo ad creatives were hoping to elicit for these shows and movies they were trying to advertise outdoors.
The first billboard example is for the 2010 comedy Grown Ups and the marketing featured younger versions of the film’s stars, Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade andRob Schneider, in an effort to convey the premise of the movie and for the ad to grab attention amidst all the other billboards in L.A.’s crowded skies. This billboard was photographed along the Sunset Strip in June 2010.
Next up is an Emmy consideration billboard for late-night host Conan O’Brien and his weeknight TBS show, photographed along Pico Boulevard in July 2019. The pale, freckled, redheaded childhood photo of the TV host (who is still instantly recognizable) really made his FYC ad campaign stand out from the crowded field of competing  late-night Emmy hopefuls.
And the final billboard using this technique is this example for the seventh season of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, who used a school uniform photo of his spotty, dorky younger self to help his returning late-night satirical news show make a fun impression in the skies of L.A., in this case along Sunset Boulevard, in February 2020.
Obviously this gimmick wouldn’t be effective if everyone chose to employ it, but hopefully it put a smile on your face.
Stay safe and healthy and come back next month when we’ll be looking at three Banksy-inspired billboards.
