Marquee Media operates high profile billboard plant with 54 total faces including 32 digital displays in California.  The company is co-owned by Jeff Joaquin and Michael Wagener.  In December 2022 Marquee sold 11 digital displays and 6 static bulletins in Sacramento to Lamar Advertising. Insider talked with Marquee President and co-founder Jeff Joaquin whose out of home experience includes stints with Clear Channel Outdoor in Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco, Patrick Media, Eller Media and Westfield.

Jeff Joaquin, Marquee Media

How did you get into the out of home advertising business Jeff?

I started in the Real Estate department at Foster & Kleiser in 1984 out of college, and thought I’d only stay to build a resume.   Thirty eight years later I’m still in the out of home business and have fulfilled a dream I’ve had since Karl Eller bought the company I was working for ( Patrick Media Group ) in 1995 and that was to eventually own my own billboard company. Little did I know then, that it would take me back to where it all started for me, in Sacramento and partnering with the Sacramento Kings.

What’s new at Marquee Media over the past year?

Since selling our Sacramento freeway digitals to Lamar in 2022, we have shifted our primary focus to FULL motion displays centered around key gathering places; such as, our Marquee Center Court Triplets at the Golden 1 Center…NBA Arena, home the Sacramento Kings, and BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, home to Major League Soccers, LAFC and the National Women’s Soccer League, Angel City.
Marquee Media’s 7 digital displays in Sacramento, including the Grand Entrance displays on Golden 1 Center, reach concert fans,  NBA fans, conventions and recently March Madness Elite 8 Women’s Basketball.  All displays are generally offered as complete package to maximize impact and audience recall and engagement.
Marquee’s partnership with the LAFC delivers 9 digital high impact displays offering brands the opportunity to intersect a captive diverse audience at one of the MLS most successful teams in both Men’s and women’s professional soccer. This includes many of the FIFA World Cup Fan Experiences coming in June, where direct onsite and Memorial Coliseum audience of loyal soccer fans will hit over 500,000 people during the events.
Both of these Marquee Media destinations offer inescapably audience recall and engagement. People love larger than life creative on larger than life screens. NOTE the @15,000 fans outside Golden 1 Center watching the playoff game live on our Marquee Triplets…with sound…it was an amazing experience!
What are some of your objectives for the coming year?
Hopefully building another impactful Full Motion Display somewhere in California…and continuing to grow revenues beyond the industry standard, by bringing new brands to life on our displays.
What’s your take on the importance of impressions measurement and the recent steps that the industry has been taking.
We think that a common impression/media currency that is accepted and embraced by all stakeholders, but especially Agencies and Brands is the key to future share growth. It seems like we have made some progress; however, we have been talking about growing our share to 10% for over 20 years and the progress has been dreadfully slow. With all of the great technology available it seems like the industry can and will figure it out.
