Stephen Johnson

Stephen and Linda Johnson have started a new Outdoor Company, Waller Outdoor, initially serving the Waller Texas community.  They have recently installed their first structure with two digital faces.  Insider caught up with Stephen to discuss the business.

Stephen, you have two years now operating your digital sign.  How’s your progress been and what have you learned?

We’ve obviously learned a lot in the past couple of years operating our two digitalis. We continue to stay about 80% sold out (we are currently sold out on 7 of our 8 slots on each billboard) and are optimistic that we’ll continue that trend.
We’ve learned that allowing our small businesses and non-profits to lean on us when they need help with their events helps us keep our slots filled. It’s important to maintain that community support.

With one sign and two faces during the 2020 Covid shutdown, how did Waller Outdoor weather the year?

We actually started the year sold out and lost one client during the year – 6 of 8 of our slots on each board were continual clients and we didn’t lose any of them. When we began our digital billboards in Waller, we spent the first 6 months seeing what the community could support in terms of cost and once we achieved that number, it has not been hard keeping the slots filled.
Currently, two years in, we still have 4 of 8 of our continual customers running ads on both boards, and we are currently sold out on 7 of our 8 slots.

So what does the future hold?  Any plans for growth in the coming year?

I believe that Waller Outdoor serves a community that enjoys an affordable way to advertise and I think digital billboards are still an exciting medium for a small community. Every week, we see people parked out under the boards watching them or taking pictures. It’s very rewarding to be a part of the excitement.

Just yesterday, I sold a client an ad on both boards and he asked me when the ads would be “live” because he wanted to go by the site and see it. People still get excited to see their name up in lights.
