Sam Mooney, GM

Insider spoke with Stein Signs’ General Manager, Sam Mooney for his perspective on this third generation, family owned OOH operation.

Can you share some history of the Stein family and Stein Sign Display?

Stein Sign Display is northeast South Dakota’s premier sign provider. We are capable of producing and installing any type of sign your business or organization may need. With tenured employees and decades of knowledge and experience, no other sign company can match our level of expertise. From the first contact until the sign is installed, you’ll feel confident you made the right decision.

Stein Sign Display was founded in 1952 by Clint L. Stein. After serving in the Air Force and returning from World War II, Clint started working at Ralph’s Neon. He later purchased it and named it Hi-way Sign Company, largely because it was located on Highway 212 and the company had many billboard locations across the state. In 1972, the name of the company was changed to Stein Sign Display. Clint Stein also started a wholesale sign manufacturing business called ESCO Manufacturing in 1965. ESCO produces signs for other retail companies (like Stein Sign Display) across the world. He designed and patented a machine called The Rollformer, capable of producing sign frames with one sheet of metal.

10’ tall and 60’ long sign installation

Mark Stein, 2nd Generation owner and son of Clint, began his career in the sign industry in 1980. Eight years later, he purchased both businesses and has grown the business substantially. In 2000, ESCO Manufacturing expanded with opening a production facility in Webster, SD. In 2011 Elite Signs and Graphix was purchased to provide an even broader array of sign products to Watertown and the surrounding region.

In 2014, Stuart Stein (son of Mark, grandson to Clint), started as General Manager of Stein Sign Display. Growing up and being around the family business, Stuart has worked in several departments over the years. On 2/5/2020, Stuart became the 3rd Generation owner.

Well over 100 people are employed within the 3 companies and are proudly committed to building the best signs in the industry. With almost 7 decades of sign knowledge and experience, put your trust in an established company known for professional craftsmanship and quality signs.

Tell us about your billboard plant?
We have billboards all over eastern SD and into ND and MN. In total, we have roughly 200 faces available for our advertisers to choose from. We also have 2 digital billboards located in Watertown, SD.

Winters in South Dakota can be harsh.  How do you handle the cold winter weather as you service your signs?
A majority of us have lived here our entire lives. Rain, snow, sleet, hail…we’ve seen it all. Sometimes there aren’t enough layers to keep up warm, but our customers NEED to see their sign. We’ll service your sign in any reasonable condition to assure that your business is getting the most of your sign. Our install team is experienced and dedicated.

The Company seems very involved in the community.  Can you share a recent example?

Beings that we are a 3rd Generation locally run and operated company, we take pride in what we do for our community. We have many employees serving on various boards and in various capacities, such as school boards or assisting with PACH (People Against Child Hunger). We often donate adds on our billboards in conjunction with the police department, fire department and other non- profit entities. About a year ago, each of our hundred employees were given $40 cash with simple instructions. Put $20 in your pocket and do with it as you wish. Take the other $20 and pay it forward. Bless someone with a random act of kindness.

I take pride in working for a locally owned and operated company. A company that has been in business for almost 7 decades. A company that is the areas only turn-key sign manufacturer. I always tell customers that we have the capabilities of a big time corporation but the feel of a locally owned company because that’s who we are. We live by our Core Values; ONE TEAM/ENGAGED/INTEGRITY and back it up with our Vision Statement: Creating WOW experiences for our team members, customers, and communities
