Saben Outdoor is a small, family-owned firm that owns static and digital billboards in the Atlanta area. Many of the billboards are along I-85 south of Atlanta and I-20 west of Atlanta. The company also provides management services for billboards. Saben is an operator associate in the IBOUSA. Mark Shugart is the firm’s President.
How did you enter the out of home business?
Our business is family-owned, and has been in operation for 60 years. Mark’s grandfather started the first billboard, and we have been steadily working on growth ever since. We are particularly fortunate to be able to live in the community where we work, and to use our marketing to highlight local businesses, organizations, and events that support our community.
Whose digital billboards do you use and what have you learned?
We have digital billboards through Formetco; we have been very happy with their support and knowledge to help us grow our business. Our favorite thing about the digital billboards is the room for creative and flexible advertising — we really love for people to push the envelope and to change their artwork frequently.
How has COVID impacted your company?
We have been very fortunate to continue to operate during COVID. The largest impact we experienced was a wonderful opportunity — we were able to expand our ability to work within the community to support our local businesses and non-profit organizations. We used our platform to highlight vital volunteer organizations, communicate changes and openings of local businesses, and to advertise safety measures and operation changes. Otherwise, our outside operators continued to work with additional safety measures, and our office team worked remotely for most of the year.
