Joyce Outdoor Advertising operates a plant which includes 33 total billboard and wall faces including 5 digital faces in New Jersey, Chicago and Pennsylvania.  In September 2019 the company developed a wallscape targeting the athletic facilities of Scranton Preparatory School.  The company’s owner Kevin Joyce is the only person Insider knows who practiced basketball on a hoop made of billboard scraps.  That’s growing up in the business!

Kevin Joyce, Founder, Joyce Outdoor

Kevin, how did you enter the outdoor business?

I grew up in the outdoor business, and like my father and uncles, I fell in love with it right away.

What’s new since we talked last?

The state had an eminent domain where they took a building to widen a bridge.  We lost a wallscape.  We hired Paul Wright at Signvalue and he was tremendous.  His testimony was so detailed and granular that he left the DOT’s expert with no rebuttle.  We’ve quietly expanded our wallscapes inventory but have been conservative with digital builds given current interest rates.  High interest rates for construction have caused us to sit on some permits.  We’ve welcomed a seasoned veteran, Michael Schulte to lead our sales efforts.  With over 20 years experience at two of the big 3, Michael has been a fantastic hire, albeit a bit of a culture shock.

Whose digital signs do you use?

We have both Daktronics and Formetco displays. Both manufacture great products, supported by great service. I’ve learned that they are striving to make their systems as user friendly as possible, often saving time. That’s certainly a commodity for small operators.

Six or eight second digital flips?

We’ve maintained an eight second hold time for rotating advertisers.
