Chris Jarman, Owner, Jarman Outdoor

How did you get into the out of home business?

A major fast food chain was coming to my hometown the same year I was starting to build a house.  I had an idea of building a billboard on family land to help make my new house payment.  I met with the managers of the chain to show them my location and proposal.  Not only did they accept my proposal on the spot, they asked if I wanted to do advertising for them on all roads coming into town.  So, I went from building one face to 5 structures in one short meeting!  Jarman Outdoor Advertising was born on that day.

Tell us about your plant.

I went to work as an administrative manager for a textile company straight out of college.  As mentioned above, I stumbled into the OOH industry almost by accident after meeting with the managers of a fast food chain in my hometown.  Once I completed construction of the first 5 structures, I continued building a few structures each year while still working in textiles.  I continued to work in textiles until 2016, when I decided to put all my time in OOH.  I currently have faces in many eastern NC counties.  I enjoy working directly with my customers and landowners as I treat them the way I would want to be treated.  I take pride in my plant as it has become a piece of the community I live in.

Do you have any digitals?

I do not “currently” have any digitals in my inventory, but I am always looking for that perfect spot.

What are some of your objectives for the next year?

We made the decision to pull back a little when the pandemic hit because of not knowing what impact it would have on the industry. Looking back, we probably should have kept expanding during that time because as it turned out, it didn’t have much of an impact on our business. However, we paid down a lot of debt during this time period and that has put us in a good position going forward for new projects.
