Circle City Outdoor operates a 71 face billboard plant in Indiana and Minnesota.  The signs are clustered around Indianapolis, Indiana and Northfield, Minnesota.  The company is managed by Duane Fredrickson.

Duane, how did you get in the out home business?

I got into the outdoor advertising business in a rather unusual way. I was just a kid and working behind a counter at a lumberyard. I knew that I wanted to own my business and I wanted it to meet certain criteria. I wanted it to be business to business, have no moving parts, very little or no warranty work, and a whole page of other criteria. I narrowed it down to cement burial vaults and outdoor advertising. The barriers to entry with cement burial vaults was too high and so I chose outdoor advertising. I got in my car and wrote down the location of a number of grassy hills on major roads. I soon found out that there was a whole lot more to the business. I figured out the regulatory landscape and started building sites in 1982.  Circle City hired me to run it’s plant after purchasing some of my billboards during 2018.

What’s new during the past year?

Circle City Outdoor billboard in Minnesota

Quite a bit.  We’ve added some new signs in Minnesota.  We’re in a just compensation proceeding with the State of Indiana which condemned one of our billboards to widen a freeway.  We are renegotiating some leases. We just installed high efficiency lights from Reliable Electric and Smartlink remote control on 4 of our structures.

Any digitals?

Not yet.  Indianapolis hasn’t yet approved a sign code which will permit new digitals.  Many of our signs outside Indianapolis and in Minnesota are in areas with lower rents where a digital isn’t the best use of money.

What are your priorities for next year.

Continue to grow the company, especially in Minnesota.  We’re updating several Indiana structures.  We intend to install some digital billboards in Indianapolis if the sign code ever permits.
