Billboards Have Beaten Covid

The roadside billboard business has put covid in the rear view mirror.  Street furniture and transit are recovering but still down.  Place-based lags.  That’s apparent when you parse the US out of home industry by format as reported by the OAAA.

This chart shows the third quarter 2021 performance of each sector of the US out of home industry over prior year.  All sectors are up.  They couldn’t help it because of the weak 2020 comps.

But the next table compares performance in the third quarter of 2021 to pre-covid levels in the third quarter of 2019.  Billboard revenues are 4% above their pre-covid level.  Street Furniture is 12% below pre-covid levels.  Transit and Place-based are lagging with revenues off 37% and 61% from pre-covid levels.
