Best Paint for Billboard Structures

Insider received two followup questions from last week’s painting billboard structures post and asked our billboard fabrication experts to respond

What primer and paint have proven best in terms of longevity for wood and metal structures?

What companies specialize in painting billboard structures?

Jon Odom, President, Productivity Fabricators.

We have had very good results with Sherwin-Williams KEM AQUA 280, water reducible enamel.  They have a primer and about any color in this product.

I do not know of any painting company specializing in billboard painting.  Some of my customers use local painting companies to do their painting.

To get into the depths of a discussion about primer and paint can be quite involved. When asking the question of the “Best” we find that most often we want to discuss the “best” at a reasonable cost. Primers can run from $20.00 per gallon on the low end to more than $100.00 per gallon for a high-quality product. Paints will also fall under the same wide range in price and quality.

It is important to note the surface preparation and application is very important to the performance of the applied product.

Things to be considered include:

  • Environment
  • Temperature when the product will be applied
  • Humidity when the products will be applied
  • Exposure to salt, sun, sand, air born chemicals
  • Protection from soils
  • Standing water

The list goes on and on.

We paint some structures for customers.  It is not our main business but we will do it for some customers.
