A Super Bowl Update – The Joe Burrow Billboard

Two years ago, Insider published a piece on the importance of involving young people in the billboard industry. In honor of the 2022 Super Bowl and Bengals quarterback, Joe Burrow, I wanted to provide an update on this topic.

Who designed the Joe Burrow billboard?

Micah Fluellen, Joe Burrow billboard designer.

The billboard was designed by Micah Fluellen, a college student from Ohio University. At the time, Micah was an intern in Washington, DC. He designed the billboard at the encouragement of the OAAA’s Ken Klein.

Why is Athens (Ohio) thanking Joe Burrow?

Burrow was a standout quarterback at Athens High School before playing at Ohio State and then moving onto LSU where he won a national championship. In Burrow’s 2019 Heisman acceptance speech, he mentioned food insecurity and hunger in his home area as issues of importance to him, prompting an outpouring of donations.

What’s the rest of the story?

  • More than $1.3 million, mostly in the form of small donations, has been raised in Burrow’s honor to fight hunger in SE Ohio. Some gave $9, in honor of Burrow’s uniform number.
  • Micah Fluellen, who designed the Joe Burrow billboard, graduated from college in 2020. He is now a Features Art Director for the Los Angeles Times.
  • Ken Klein retired from OAAA at the end of 2021.
