Jason Morgan’s Upcoming Out of Home Book

Jason Morgan, the publisher of Daily Billboard Blog, is publishing Made You Look 500 Eye Catching Ideas from the Sprawling Skies of Los Angeles.  Billboard Insider interviewed Morgan.

Jason, tell us about the book.

In essence, it’s a love letter to the OOH industry. “Made You Look! features over 500 eye-catching billboards photographed around Los Angeles from 2008 to 2021.   Spinning out of the Daily Billboard blog I published for over a decade it’s 250+ pages that explores the outdoor marketing practices, graphic design ideas and head-turning gimmicks that have recurred over the years in the sprawling city skyline. There are examples from the entertainment industry – TV, movie and music, plus fashion, food, drinks, technology, travel and other lifestyle segments. The book includes an abundance of fun spoofs, homages and copycat ads, plus seasonal and locally tailored billboards all designed to stand out in the crowded OOH landscape. I hope it will be a nostalgic snapshot from around LA, spark creative ideas and shine a spotlight on the talent who were involved in creating all these outdoor advertising campaigns.

Why is LA such a hotbed of billboard creative.

Los Angeles/Hollywood is the entertainment capital of the world, so it’s no surprise that the streets and skyline are jam-packed with creative and innovative ideas too. Not only are there thousands employed in the TV and movie industry, but the sprawling metropolis is home to almost 4 million sets of eyeballs and has a constant stream of tourists from all around the world.

And dare I say there’s also a real captive audience of people commuting in their cars. When I’m stuck in traffic I actually enjoy seeing engaging billboards rather than staring into dead space.

What’s your favorite billboard design in the book.

I think I’d prefer to say they’ve all made an impression over the years and that’s why they’ve ended up in the book. I’m constantly surprised and amazed by the billboards that pop up in the city skyline – the special installations, the cut-out extensions, the striking and imaginative key art. There are a lot of curated favorites in this book from my archives, and I hope that people will enjoy discovering them and will let me know their own favorites.

Where can I get the book?

The book is available as an e-book and for print edition pre-sale on Amazon(where you can also see a preview of what’s inside) and at Barnes & Noble. If not for yourself, I’m sure this book would be the perfect addition for your office.
