Johnson Outdoor is a family owned business which was started in 1978.  The firm is in several Texas communities including Abilene, Austin, Killeen, Round Rock and Waco.

Johnson Outdoor Advertising has officed since 1996 in a restored building located in historic downtown Round Rock. Insider spoke with Archie Johnson, the company’s General Manager.

Can you share with us how the Johnson family got involved in Outdoor and the history of Johnson Outdoor?

My father worked for Sterling Outdoor Advertising in Houston. In high school and college I worked for Mr. Sterling during the summer and other breaks from school. In 1978 when I was a Junior at the University of Texas I built a couple of billboards of my own to pay for school and after graduation I began operating Johnson Outdoor Advertising full time. My Dad worked for me for a number of years.

What markets do you service?

Central, East and West Texas. We are currently developing new locations in New Mexico.

How many signs do you own and operate? Are any of the signs digital?

Over the years we have developed and sold hundreds of billboards. We currently have around 50 billboards in operation, none digital.
