Billboard Insider recently talked with Kevin Conlin of Autonomous Power about some innovations in solar billboard installations.
So, what’s a solar platform?
The platform is designed to make my customer’s life easier. It will accommodate a complete solar lighting system at sites where the structure doesn’t lend itself to solar because of compass orientation, limited room between faces and customers who prefer to keep the solar off the board for aesthetic reasons. It’s fabricated from laser cut steel, which is hot dip galvanized for a 30 year life span.
Can you explain what it does?
It clamps to the structure with galvanized steel U-bolts that match the column diameter and requires no welding or onsite fabrication. It keeps the solar array, battery box and controls at a convenient level for ease of installation and ease of service. Tamperproof hardware is standard, and all of the solar components are laser cut to accommodate tamperproof fasteners.
What are the benefits to the customer?
- Ease of installation as everything is precision cut and fits well, shading the battery box which greatly extends battery life, shorter solar and battery cables, and easier battery replacement down the road. In Salt Lake City last week, the sign structure was very tall, so the platform kept everything closer to the ground.
- Since it’s low on the column, it doesn’t distract from the billboard message.
- It also qualifies for the 30% tax credit, since it is a solar platform.
