Digital billboard installation in Lonsdale, Minnesota

Yesterday Britt McConnell had an excellent article explaining how turnkey billboard installation eliminates risk during billboard construction.   If you don’t do a turnkey install, you need to think carefully about insurance to mitigate risks.

There here are typically four parties involved—fabricator/digital billboard manufacturer, trucking company, installer, and the billboard owner—and all must be aligned to ensure the display is protected from the moment it leaves the factory until it is safely mounted on the structure.

  • The structure or digital billboard is the responsibility of the manufacturer until it is loaded on a truck.  Then things get complicated.
  • The structure or digital billboard are the responsibility of the trucking company once the product is loaded on a truck. Ask your sign maker if they or their trucking company have insurance for the sign when it’s in transit.
  • The structure or digital billboard are the responsibility of the installer or crane operator the moment the structure of digital billboard is lifted off a truck. Ask your fabricator or installer or crane operator for a certificate of insurance to make sure they are covered if they drop or damage your structure or digital billboard during installation.
  • Once the structure or digital billboard is installed it is your responsibility.  Contact your insurance company a few days ahead of install if you want to have an insurance policy on the digital sign in place on the date of the install.

Billboard Insider hears that digital billboard replacement insurance is hard to get and may be impossible in some storm plagued areas.  We’ll write more about this next week.
