Microsoft Outage Impacts Some Digital Billboard Cameras

Some digital billboard cameras have been impacted by the Microsoft Azure outage.

Starting at 9:00 am Tuesday October 29, Microsoft experienced a major web outage relating to the Azure cloud service.  Companies which relied on Microsoft Cloud services were impacted.  We have heard for example that digital billboard cameras which were relayed through the Microsoft cloud stopped working.  One billboard operator wrote Billboard Insider, “All my 18 screen cameras went down today across multiple cities and 5 different internet providers…my digital billboard manufacturer tells me that access to web cameras is routed through Microsoft servers and they are experiencing issues.”

The actual digital billboards were fine and ads kept showing.  It was the the digital billboard cameras that were the problem.  The digital billboard camera outages only impacted the digital billboard cameras which relayed though the cloud via Microsoft.

The outage had to do with what Microsoft calls an “inadvertent configuration change.”  Microsoft says the company restored service by end of day Wednesday, October 29.  You can read about the entire event at the Azure Status History page.
