The Sacramento Bee reports that Sacramento City Council has voted to loosen rules about signs to make way for 3,206 square feet of outdoor displays at the 17,500 seat Golden 1 Center. That’s equivalent to five 14′ by 48′ billboards.
The city council is also considering a special sign district for the 8 block area around the Golden 1 Center labeled “Downtown Commons”. Sign companies and property owners are discussing the possibility of adding bright LED displays and billboard and ads projected on walls aimed at marketing which targets pedestrians congregating downtown.
Insider’s take: Sacramento joins Baltimore and and New York in realizing that digital signs and billboards can be an engine for growth. Indianapolis and Tacoma just don’t get it.
