Ted Bratsos of All Steel Structures, Inc. talked with Billboard Insider about a unique billboard constructions project
Ted, you did an interesting build recently. Tell us about it.
We recently completed a job in Ohio that required us to overcome some installation challenges. The sign specification was, 14’x48’, Partial Flag, Offset, 20’V, 150’ Overall Height, Double Digital
What were some of the special challenges and how did you get around them?
- Working near a river with soft clay and a high-water table.
- Working extremely close to an operating restaurant.
- Water lines, Grease trap lines & tank and other utilities in very close proximity.
- A typical drilled or vibrated foundation was not feasible for this location.
What were the results?
We successfully installed the column to the required depth of 77’-6” using the oscillation method (Twisting the column pipe into the ground). This approach allowed us to avoid disturbing nearby utilities and prevented any risk of damage to the adjacent building or its foundation. The installation was completed safely, efficiently, and without incident. Here’s a link to a youtube video showing the oscillating process.
Have you seen an increase in steel prices as a result of tariffs?
Even though we don’t import foreign steel we are seeing the local mills increasing pricing in anticipation of limited competition. Once current inventory levels are depleted, we expect to see higher replacement costs.
