Fotofetch crowd-sources out of home asset photos nationwide.  Insider talked with Gary Gamesberger about the company.

How did you get involved with the out of home industry?

One of our early investors is an OOH veteran who saw what our image fetching strategy is all about.  He showed us how OOH is an image sensitive industry.  Yet there are no standards, even in the vernacular of words to describe a photo.  One company may call it a beauty shot, another calls it an A plus and a third might refer to it as a standard approach shot.  We also couldn’t help but notice even with an industry so built on image, we saw really poor photos passed along to customers, shared to social media and certainly and most noticeably in the spec sheets.   To us, OOH has a huge need to fill and we have the tech and business model to fill it.

How does Fotofetch do business?

Our business model is a modern one, we get you a photo from anywhere at any time starting at $33.  We don’t charge extra for remote places or bundle you with photo shoots or deposits, we sell you only the photos you need.  Yes, beauty shots or drone videos obviously cost more, but we are very reasonably priced.   We use some pretty cool tech to pull this off while turning some notions about commercial photography on its head.  .

We pay for photos so that we can transact the ownership of the photos.    If you are familiar with Geofencing, we began prompting people 3 years ago to take photos for us, first in Washington, then Oregon and then California.  It was during that time when we realized what opportunity OOH provided us.   Keep in mind, we do cell phone photos too in our other industry markets; they aren’t the quality needed for OOH unless it is for POP or damage assessment.

What services does your company provide to out of home companies?

We shot our first billboard photos a few years ago for Outfront which kickstarted our process  into OOH.  Since then we went to work learning the out of home advertising industry, from the ground up so to speak.  We are writing what we believe to be an industry standard for photo types that eventually should take hold regardless of who owns the boards or the markets in which they are located.  Our goal is simple, make FotoFetch the national provider of images giving OOH companies a single source for consistent reliable photos. Right now we provide these types of photos:

  • POP

  • Approach

  • Close-Ups

  • Beauty Shots

  • Drive-by videos

  • Drone photos

  • Drone videos

  • Maintenance (examples – verify lights working properly, faded, or for graffiti)

  • Repair photos (quick shots for storm or accident damage)

  • Real Estate photos (trees, unsightly conditions around the board, etc)

What’s better: a drone shot or a picture?

We think drone shots are super cool, we do them too, but does that tell the story that needs to be told for OOH?  We find that most companies need to provide a drive by perspective.   We know that good photos and videos can drive rates and get boards sold, especially to national clients.

  1. They USE photographers…their payments are WELL BELOW what a photographer would ever charge, AND THEY DON’T PAY MILEAGE or PARKING, NOTHING!

They are also very savvy communicating. They will try to play you.

Would you go shoot 10-12 pictures at an establishment for $20? Would you pay anyone $20 to do a shoot for them? Howz about $30 – again, no mileage.

They are USERS, and they will try to get a photo for CHEAP< CHEAP< CHEAP! They seem nice, but read between the lines…they don't give a damn about you.
