Lewis Manderson

Industry legend Lewis Manderson Jr. has passed away.  He was 94.  Manderson founded and ran the out of home advertising company Creative Displays Inc. for over 20 years.  After selling the company he was involved investment and charitable activities.  The University of Alabama’s Manderson Graduate School of Business and the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center have been named in his honor.

Manderson at various times served as chair of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, The Institute of Outfoor Advertising and the Alabama Outdoor Advertising Association.

Jim McLaughlin tells Insider “Lewis Manderson was a mentor and friend, and I was blessed to be a protégé of his.  He was definitely one of the most important men in my life.  He touched many people, some of which are still in the industry, like me.”

OAAA President Emeritus and Lamar Board Member Nancy Fletcher says “Lew Manderson had a long, prosperous, and meaningful life that was well-lived. He mentored many of us in the out of home industry. He will be missed. ”

  1. Saddened to learn of Lew Manderson passing, although I never worked for him I worked with him while in the industry. He always gave his best and expected the same of those who worked for him and with him. A true leader in the Out of Home industry whose contributions will live well into the future.

  2. Lewis was a giant in the industry. He was a man with great insight and cared about others. He was charitable and if you knew him well, you were most probably on the receiving end of of some of his dry wit humor. He loved life, his family and the University of Alabama. We will miss you my friend.
    Rest in Peace,

I am Lewis Manderson’s former son in law and although our relationships were no always amicable, I have always had tremendous respect for him and am deeply saddened by news of his passing. I am grateful that I called Mr. Manderson about a year ago and enjoyed a satisfying conversation with him. He was very gracious and thanked me for my phone call. I am grateful that I knew this gentleman who was bigger than life. May he Rest In Peace may his family find comfort in their memories of him.
