Jennifer Sloane on Preparing for Hurricanes

Billboard being prepared for hurricane Dorian.

Out of home attorney Jennifer Sloane sent Insider this note:

What a wondrous sight to see so many operators proactively preparing for Hurricane Dorian! Remember, if your sign is in the path of even Tropical Force winds, and especially if your sign is non-conforming, it is prudent to remove the vinyl and all panels from your sign!  If your sign does blow over, local regulations often say that the non-conforming sign can be rebuilt if the repair costs are less than 50% of the sign’s replacement value. Thus, you will want to reuse as many of the existing parts as possible to conduct the repairs.  Any contractor performing your repairs should NOT use the word “rebuild” on the invoice.   Do not accept any invoices with this language.

If you lose a sign in Hurricane Dorian and have questions about your rights to rebuild, please do not hesitate to call our office.

  1. Very interesting insights. Thanks God Dorian did not hit my island of Puerto Rico, our company Power Ads removed 3 vinyls from different counties that we expected getting tropical storm winds. It’s important to always be proactive.
