Orange Barrel Media designs and operates 300 large format faces along with  smart city kiosks in nineteen cities including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Wash DC, Atlanta, Denver, Charlotte, Baltimore, Columbus and Cleveland.  The firm was started in 2004.  Orange Barrel was the winning bidder for the West Hollywood Belltower.   Here’s a picture of how the completed Belltower will look.

Insider talked with Pete Scantland, the firm’s founder.

How has covid impacted Orange Barrel?

We’ve grown by developing a business model that allows us to deliver value to our three primary constituencies: cities, the public and advertisers/agencies. COVID has impacted the benefit we can offer to these three groups differently. We have long been focused on developing assets in the core and urban neighborhoods of major cities, and these were some of the first places to be affected by COVID. We worked hard to take good care of our advertisers, and offered a great deal of flexibility and accommodation as we navigated this unprecedented situation together. While advertisers needed to pause while they charted a path forward, we found that we could help cities communicate critical information to the public, and we could help non-profits and small businesses keep the lights on with free advertising through our #OBMSUPPORTLOCAL initiative. The nature of our business requires a long term outlook- our development deals take years to mature, and are dependent on us offering a model that shares a great deal of benefit with cities and the public, and that we work hard to build great relationships with our longstanding agency partners. While we had a tough 2nd and 3rd quarter, I’m confident that the good work we did in our communities and with our agencies will benefit us as we emerge from the crisis together.

What else is new.

We’re using our digital kiosks to promote voting using a dynamic ticker count down to state specific voting deadlines and a “Tap Screen” call to action leading to an app on the kiosk that allows users to register to vote and request an absentee ballot on their mobile devices. The campaign is also running on our large-format screens nationwide, and will deliver 105 million impressions before election day
