Clay Robertson says billboards “are the difference between being here and not.”

The anti-billboard crowd says that billboards don’t work in a world of mobile phones.  Tell that to Clay Robertson.  IBOUSA General Manager Chris Cowlbeck interviewed Robertson, the owner of Robertson’s Hams of Marrieta Oklahoma.  Some of the highlights.

How did you get started with billboards.

My dad put in a little meat shop and he sold ham bacon and sausage…When I got out of high school in ’61 that’s where I worked.  Then we built a new store…We had two large billboards advertising Ham, Bacon and Sausage…A lady wrote a letter to us and said “I’d like to have a ham sandwich but you don’t have it on your sign.”  So in ’63 we went out there and put up a ham sandwich sign with our billboard…The day it went up…our business doubled in one day just by saying we had ham sandwiches.  And people started to stop…

What impact do the signs make?

The difference between being here and not.  It’s been such a wonderful blessing for us to have these highway signs.  We’re in rural Oklahoma.  We have a rural looking store.  We sell rural country product…
