The Yuma Sun reports that the Yuma, Arizona City Council is considering the following changes to the city’s sign ordinance:
- A limitation of digital sign brightness to 6,500 nits during daylight hours and 300-342 nits during nighttime.
- Extensions can’t extend more than five feet beyond a horizontal surface of a sign or three feet beyond a vertical surface of a sign.
- A non-conforming sign may be continued indefinitely so long as the structure is not altered or enlarged.
Insider’s take: The 342 nit nighttime brightness rule means digital signs won’t be visible at certain times of the day and times of the year year but Arizona has a 342 nit statewide digital sign limit to protect astronomy facilities. Giving non-conforming signs in Yuma permanent status is a win because the city’s 2015 sign ordinance made 165 billboards non-conforming.
