Women Account for 35% of US OOH Board Seats

The US public out of home companies are giving women more board opportunities than the typical Russell 3000 company but need to do a better job appointing minorities to boards.

Non-Executive Board Members of OUTFRONT, Lamar and Clear Channel Outdoor 2020

  • Clear Channel pays board members the most (in excess of $240,000 per year), followed by OUTFRONT ($199,000 per year) and Lamar ($140,000 per year).
  • The US public out of home companies do a better job than the Russell 3000 companies in giving women board seats.  Women accounted for 35% of the non-executive board seats at US out of home companies during 2020 versus an average of 20% for the typical Russell 3000 company.  Kudos to Lamar where women hold 50% of non-executive board seats.  Women account for 50% of all US jobs.
  • The US public companies need to give minorities more board opportunities.  Minorities accounted for 13% of the US public out of home company board seats versus an average of 20% for the Russell 3000 public companies.
  • There is variation in who makes what on boards.  Some companies pay more to board members who have extra duties (like committee heads or lead independent directors).  Board pay can also be lower if you are appointed part way through the year (as Lamar’s Nancy Fletcher was in May 2020).   Clear Channel Outdoor’s Jinhy Joon is a capital markets credit analyst so Insider suspects she doesn’t take a board salary to avoid a conflict of interest.
