Will 4,203 Signatures Get You a New Digital Billboard?

The Austin Business Journal is reporting that Keep Round Rock Safe, a group of local businesses pushing for more digital  billboards in the Austin suburb of Round Rock, turned in 4,203 signatures to the city on Dec. 26, surpassing the required amount needed to get its item on a ballot this coming May.  Currently there is only one off premise digital billboard in Round Rock and that sign was grandfathered in before the City voted to prohibit off premise digital signs.

Keep Round Rock Safe  states their coalition believes that digital sign technology should be available for businesses of all sizes. They are proposing that Round Rock leadership expand access by allowing a limited number (twelve) of signs to be installed along I-35 and SH-45 only.

The coalition of businesses throughout Round Rock hired a consulting group, who’s study pointed out that the new signs will generate over $225 million in annual economic activity due to the increased reach and awareness of the local business community.

Insider’s Take: This caught our eye as the push for digital is coming from local businesses who recognize they can benefit from well placed, high quality off premise digital signage.  The group seems to have a solid strategy and the firm they hired to evaluate economic impact was the same group previously hired by the City Council to evaluate the fiscal benefits of the cities new Performing Arts Center.  We will keep an eye on this one and keep you updated.
