A newly installed wind turbine came apart and took out a digital billboard in New York yesterday. You can read about the accident and watch video of the digital billboard falling on the Eyewitness News website.
Insider’s take: Insider guesses that the wind turbine company will ultimately be liable but accidents happen and a commercial liability insurance will protect you from property or personal injury claims if a billboard falls. Replacement insurance may not make sense for a fully confirming static billboard which can cheaply and easily be rebuilt but it’s a must for digital billboards which can cost $100,000-200,000 per face. The digital billboard taken out by the wind turbine could create a variety of problems if the sign is nonconforming to either state, county or local ordinances… A sign like this may not be replaceable.
