Whose Bus Shelter Is It?

The Scenic America blog has a post urging members to email LA city council members to oppose a smart shelter program due to safety and privacy concerns.  The picture which runs on the blog’s home page is a West Hollywood smart bus shelter.

Maybe Scenic America ought to ask West Hollywood what they think of the shelters.  In a May 2019 Government technology article the city of West Hollywood’s Innovation manager says that the shelters have a “bespoke design”, a revenue sharing agreement, ergonomic wooden seats, bus arrival info and USB ports for phone charging.  The smart shelters are part of West Hollywood’s Smart Cities Strategic Plan.  All this at no cost to the city because OUTFRONT/Decaux are putting in the shelters for free in exchange for a cut of the ad revenues.  6,000 bus stops in LA lack shelter.  Maybe smart shelters will help solve the problem – at no cost to a city which is facing a $600 million budget deficit.
