Wes Frick on Including Your Designer in the Creative Consultation

Wes Frick, Wes Frick Design Agency

There’s a certain magic that happens when your out of home clients are able to work directly with their designers. Involving your designer in a call with the client allows them to ask your client questions about their advertising goals, motives behind locations, target markets, and get a feel for their personalities. Real-time conversations between a client and designer enable a higher level of accuracy because they’re able to communicate more efficiently, allowing multiple opportunities to explain the creative process effectively, educating clients on best practices, and even sell extensions and digital capabilities with ease & confidence.

Recently, I have been meeting with out of home clients over Zoom and designing their billboards in real-time in front of them while asking the questions about their campaign mentioned above. I use images of billboards at a far distance to display how ineffective a busy billboard is, and clients immediately understand simplicity, resulting in less contact information, better images, and more conceptual ideas. Clients also get involved in the creative process and usually put their own touch on the creative, which makes them proud of their designs and it’s more entertaining for them.
The more informed your designer is, the better and more accurate the creative will be. Especially for advanced projects with a lot of back and forth communication, this is a game-changer. Your designer knows a lot of tips and tricks, and will be the one that creates the final design. Allowing them to share their knowledge is eye-opening and is the key to having an amazing interaction with your clients.
