Out of home is an industry of small firms. The US Census analyzes industry data every five years. Here’s a summary of out of home establishments by number of employees based on 2012 data for out of home advertising. Insider notes two interesting things.
- The 2012 census records 2,706 out of home advertising firms. This is well above Insider’s estimate of 800 billboard operators. The reason is that the census NAICS code is quite expansive and includes billboard companies, transit advertisers, indoor advertisers, store display, taxicab advertising and display advertising.
- Out of home is an industry of small firms. 60% of all firms in the industry have fewer than 4 employees. 97% of all firms in the industry have fewer than 50 employees.
