Insider has previously reported on billboard technology that can identify the make, model, and year of cars as they approach an LED sign.
Yahoo Tech reports that Smart data storage company Cloudian and Japanese advertising company Dentsu will be launching a campaign in Japan this fall based on the technology.
Cloudian and Dentsu tested smart billboard vehicle recognition earlier this year with impressive results. Combining big data and deep learning, the test identified vehicles in traffic correctly 94 percent of the time.
To become so accurate, the companies trained a computer system by showing it hundreds of thousands of vehicle images taken from used car websites. As Dentsu and Cloudian’s computers saw more and more images of a specific type of automobile — averaging about 4,000 per car — the system learned to recognize the features that distinguish a given type of car. This process relied on a type of artificial intelligence called deep learning, in which machines recognize patterns in huge piles of data. Their system can now recognize correctly 200 vehicles .
Once the system has identified a vehicle, it will display a targeted ad on the LED billboard. The choice of ads to be displayed to specific vehicles is determined by the advertisers. For example, people driving a five-year old vehicle might see an ad for a newer model of the same car. Truck drivers might be shown ads for upcoming trucker-friendly stops.
